Bainbridge Islanders joined together at Waypoint Park for a Flashlight Vigil on January 10th, creating space to process the many harms of 2025, and to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our neighbors and standing for the essential American ideals of liberty and justice for all. Many people attended our monthly community meeting beforehand at Eagle Harbor Church and participated in a procession down Winslow way to the event, carrying our lights and messages of grief, hope, and resolve.

The vigil itself included remarks from our emcee, a flugelhorn rendition of Taps preceding a minute of silence, a sharing of hardships and hopes, and connecting through music via performances on guitar and group singalongs to familiar tunes set with original lyrics that reflect the historical moment in which we find ourselves.

In just the week leading up the vigil, even more events unfolded to add to our reasons to grieve, and plans for the vigil were adjusted to include acknowledgment of the reckless military actions in Venezuela, and the clear escalation in state violence with the killing of Renee Nicole Good.

Other Indivisible groups nationwide also held vigils this weekend, with a clear message to get ICE Out for Good. Per the ACLU, more than 1000 events were planned for the weekend nationwide, from large cities like Seattle (article | video), to small towns like Kitsap county’s own Port Orchard (video). Indivisible.org estimates that nearly 1200 events took place over the weekend.
